Maryland based musician Dean Rosenthal has long been slotted in the blues genre but on "Mid-Atlantica: Roots & Tides II" he proves his mettle with pop, rock and jazz while eschewing traditional blues almost altogether. A follow up to 2011's "South County Dirt", he honors the city of Baltimore as a Mid Atlantic icon with the opening cut "Baltimore Marilyn" - a play of words on the city as both place and girl and follows that with "Backwater Catcalls" an instrumental pitting guitar legend Dave Chappell soloing against himself in a Telecaster tornado. In a culturally appropriate (for 2020) "(If You're Gonna Lie) Lay It On Thick" he spews out the perils of parsing words in a jazzy organ drenched soup. "Do I Smell Like Weed?" builds the famous Bo Diddley beat into another instrumental frenzy while "Nary A Light" slows down the same beat to a funky piano groove. On "Brown Town" Rosenthal reminds us that, no matter what path you choose, we all end up in the same place while the rollicking "Play Me Like A Fiddle" laments another love gone bad. He fills out the CD with a straight up sad love ballad "A Bridge Too Far" and throws in Dylan covers "Girl From The North Country" and "Masterpiece" to showcase his most influential roots.

Rosenthal enlisted his long time friends and Three Piece Racket backing band members Tom Fridrich (tambourine, drums, vocals) and Jimmy Jacobs (piano, organ) to help write, record and produce while tapping some of the area's most respected musicians to flesh out his many ideas. Guitarist Dave Chappell, drummer Andy Hamburger, horn player Herb Wheatley, bassist Larry Melton, along with regular Racket members Gary Wright on mandolin and fiddler Leah Weiss, all contributed mightily to the final shape and sound. In his quest for the authentic sound and feel of the Mid Atlantic area he lives in Rosenthal doesn't hesitate to use anything at his disposal to create what he hears in his head - an old beat up console piano, pots and pans and distorted harmonica sounds are all fair game.

As Rosenthal stretches his musical adventures way past the blues and reminds the listener of what an entertainer he really is, he challenges his audience to take a ride with him down south county backroads to the roots and tides of his fertile mind.
